Archetypes and Consciousness

John Beebe, MD

Jungian analyst John Beebe constructed his archetypal model of typology based on his observation that the types of consciousness are symbolized in our dreams through archetypal roles, such as inner child and inner parent. He noticed that in movies the types are symbolized in the same ways. Several of these life roles are explored in Jung's writings, including the hero or heroine and the anima or animus. By taking his understanding from dreams and films, among other sources, John has also differentiated such catch-all categories in Jung's writing as "persona" and "shadow," finding specific places for tricksterish and oppositional behavior as well as areas of personality that are frankly undermining of self and others. He will explain how this way of looking at psyche can eventually help to free consciousness that would otherwise be used only very narrowly.

John Beebe, a former president of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, is a psychiatrist who specializes in psychotherapy. He is author of Energies and Patterns in Psychological Type: The Reservoir of Consciousness and co-editor of The Question of Psychological Types: The Correspondence of C. G. Jung and Hans Schmid-Guisan. A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, John has received the President’s Award for Exceptional Service from the Association for Psychological Type International. He has written about psychological types for numerous books and journals. Beebe has spearheaded a Jungian typological approach to the analysis of film. His eight-function, eight-archetype model of type is widely studied and applied.
