Solitude - Only for Introverts?
Virginia Thomas, PhD
Choosing to be alone – and enjoying it – is typically thought of as the domain of introverts. But do extraverts use and appreciate solitude as well? (Spoiler alert – they do! In surprising and not-so-surprising ways.)
Join the conversation with solitude researcher Gina Thomas, who has investigated the role of solitude in the lives of middle-aged adults – from writers to meditators – and in the turbulent lives of young adults in college. Now that digital communication pressures all of us to be available nearly 24/7, many people are finding less time to be alone, yet craving it more. What’s more, the capacity to be alone appears to be at risk, as individuals – including introverts – discover that they are out of practice with being truly alone with themselves.
