Type and Narcissism: Using Type Knowledge to Recognize & Deal with Narcissists
Carol Shumate, Ph.D.
This workshop will use images and videos with the goal of understanding and recognizing malignant narcissism in actual persons.
- The premise is that narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) can be recognized by the presence of an inflated function, usually the dominant or auxiliary, and by the narcissist's projection of the less-preferred functions.
- Using descriptions of the eight functions, the workshop will guide participants in how to recognize these inflations and projections in the images and videos.
- The content is based on the work of Jungian analysts and psychotherapists who specialize in NPD.
- Participants will have an opportunity to share their past encounters with narcissistic individuals and to discuss and practice tactics to use in future encounters.
Carol Shumate, PhD, has been teaching the course on psychological type at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, CA since 2013, at the invitation of Jungian analyst and psychiatrist John Beebe. She also co-edits the journal Personality Type in Depth, launched in 2010. Her goal with both enterprises is to bring together the two strands of Jungian psychology that have grown estranged since Jung first published Psychological Types: depth psychology and psychological type. Previously, she served on the board of directors for APT International. She has written a book giving a Jungian interpretation of narcissistic leadership called The Success Paradox but she has not yet unpublished it. Another book manuscript, Projection & Personality Type: The Eightfold Way of Transformation, is currently under consideration by Routledge Publishers. She has also written extensively about Beebe's eight function/eight archetype model. Her research on the trickster archetype suggests that it may be connected with malignant narcissism, i.e., those with narcissistic personality disorder may be possessed by their inner trickster. Carol has ENFP preferences.
